CAIR-Columbus Joins 350+ Delegates to Lobby Congress During National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill

On Monday, May 1, through Tuesday, May 2, CAIR-Columbus and a group of its members will join more than 350 Muslims from 26 states for the third annual National Muslim Advocacy Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

Hosted by the U.S. Council of Muslim Organizations (USCMO), a coalition of leading national and local Muslim organizations, the two-day event is designed to connect national, regional and state Muslim organizations and community members with their elected representatives in Congress.

USCMO’S advocacy day will focus on promoting a legislative agenda in support of equality and social justice issues that will be of benefit to all Americans, regardless of faith or background.

Some of these issues include:

• A round-up endorsement of all legislation pushing back against federal policies and programs wrongfully targeting Muslims.
• Supporting DREAMers and raising concerns about the Secure Communities program’s impact on civil liberties and immigrant communities
• Endorsing the End Racial and Religious Profiling Act

Last year’s event was attended by 330 delegates from 28 states who met with some 225 congressional offices – one third of the House of Representatives and almost half of the Senate.

USCMO is a coalition of a number of leading national and local Muslim organizations that seeks to promote effective communication and coordination between all American Muslim organizations and sponsor Muslim civic engagement for the good of the nation.

The founding members of USCMO are American Muslims for Palestine (AMP), Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA), Muslim American Society (MAS), Muslim Legal Fund of America (MLFA), Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA), The Mosque Cares (Ministry of Imam W. Deen Mohammed).
