(COLUMBUS, OH, 8/29/19) – On Friday, August 23, CAIR-Columbus Government Affairs and Development Coordinator Usjid Hameed presented about the “The History of Muslims in America” at Noor Islamic Cultural Center (NICC).
The event was organized in collaboration with NICC’s education committee and sought to connect the struggles of American-Muslims in the past to their struggles today. The presentation explored the American-Muslim experience from colonial America to the present, touching on topics such as slavery, discriminatory immigration and naturalization laws, the Great Migration, black nationalism, foreign affairs, and much more.
Hameed also touched on how American-Muslims can move forward and empower their community through civic engagement. CAIR-Columbus registered voters, as August 23 was National Muslim Voter Registration Day, and advertised the upcoming Muslim Advocacy Day at the Ohio Statehouse on Sept. 17.
