CAIR-Columbus Speaks to Columbus Academy of Leadership

On Saturday, June 9th, CAIR-Columbus’ Public Affairs Coordinator Usjid Hameed spoke to the Columbus Academy of Leadership (CAL) about the importance of civic engagement.

CAL is a non-profit organization that works to improve leadership skills of high school and college age-youth as well as adults through its programs. The June 9th event by CAL featured youth preparing gifts for underprivileged children in the community and then listening to speakers who discussed civic engagement related topics. Along with covering the importance of being engaged, Hameed registered voters, spoke about why it is vital to know who one’s elected representatives are, how to contact them, and how young people can get engaged in the political process.

“The task of being an active citizen is a difficult one. Current events and the present political climate make it easy to become cynical and disengage entirely. However, our community, especially young people, must remain optimistic and involved,” Hameed said, following the event. “The need for new leaders and ideas is more important than ever. I hope today’s discussion urges more young people to get engaged and understand their unique responsibility in making our society more just.”

Kenza Kamal, a student at the Ohio State University and Statehouse page, also spoke about how young people can organize to bring about change.

CAIR is America’s largest Muslim civil liberties and advocacy organization. Its mission is to enhance understanding of Islam, protect civil rights, promote justice, and empower American Muslims.

La misión de CAIR es proteger las libertades civiles, mejorar la comprensión del Islam, promover la justicia, y empoderar a los musulmanes en los Estados Unidos.
