Over 200 Attend CAIR-Columbus 22nd Annual Interfaith Iftar

(COLUMBUS, OH 05/26/18) – More than 200 people from different faiths and backgrounds attended CAIR-Columbus’ 22nd Annual sold out “Sharing Ramadan” Iftar, or fast-breaking meal, on Friday, May 25 in Columbus, Ohio. Ramadan is the Islamic month during which Muslims abstain from food and drink from before dawn to after sunset. During this month, Muslims also focus on spirituality, avoid vices, and renew community relationships.

Urge Senator Portman to Speak Out Against “Visa Lifecycle Vetting” Program

(Columbus, Ohio – 4/29/18) – Member organizations of the Interfaith March for Peace & Justice – Columbus, an interfaith, social justice coalition in Central Ohio, are urging all Americans concerned about civil rights and free speech to contact Senator Rob Portman, who sits on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, and ask him to work to halt the implementation and funding of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) “Visa Lifecycle Vetting” program, formerly known as the “Extreme Vetting Initiative.”

CAIR-Ohio Hosts Muslim Day at the Capitol Event, Lobbies Against ‘Lunch Shaming’ and Bullying

(COLUMBUS, OHIO, 11/2/17) — On Tuesday, October 31, CAIR-Ohio hosted its “Muslim Day at the Capitol” event at the Ohio Statehouse.

The event focused on empowering Ohio’s American Muslim community and advocating for legislation that would positively impact all Ohioans.

Participants attended 28 meetings with different members’ offices to discuss Senate Bill 172, The Hunger Free Students’ Bill of Rights Act, which aims to end the practice known as “lunch shaming” and for House Bill 360, the Ohio Anti-Bullying and Hazing Act, which aims to take a firm but rehabilitation-focused approach to bullying.

On Thursday, May 11 at Capital University Law School from 6-8pm join CAIR-Columbus, the ACLU of Ohio, Ohio Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild, and the American Constitution Society – Columbus Lawyer Chapter for this timely CLE program. CAIR-Columbus Participates in “Courthouse to Community” Event

CAIR-Columbus attorneys Jennifer Nimer and Romin Iqbal participated in an event titled “Courthouse to the Community”  which was organized by Columbus City Councilmember Michael Stinziano. The event was aimed at connecting immigrants with local legal service organizations. CAIR-Columbus along with 20 plus other legal providers met with members of the community to educate them about their legal services

CAIR-Columbus Director Speaks at International Women’s Day Event

CAIR-Columbus Executive Director, Jennifer Nimer, was one of three panelists to speak at the International Women’s Day event at the Ohio Statehouse on March 6, 2017.  The panelists discussed the contributions their organizations are making to advancing immigrant women’s rights in central Ohio.

Nimer said that CAIR has consistently been the leading Muslim organization in promoting women in leadership roles.  She pointed out that nationwide CAIR has many female Executive Directors, lawyers, and board members, including the current chair of the CAIR National Board.

CAIR-Columbus Speaks at Islamophobia Roundtable Hosted by City Council

Columbus City Council is continuing to fight against hate speech and discrimination.

On Monday, March 6, from 5-7pm at the Abubakar Assidiq Islamic Center, Columbus City Council held a roundtable discussion regarding the proliferation in hateful Islamophobic rhetoric and violence across the country.

A panel of interfaith leaders and representatives helped facilitate the conversation, including CAIR-Columbus Legal Director Romin Iqbal.  Mr. Iqbal also gave a report on the state of Islamophobia and status of other marginalized groups in America before the start of the panel discussion.

CAIR-Columbus to Present at CBA Program: Modern Day Hate

CAIR-Columbus Attorneys Jennifer Nimer and Romin Iqbal will be among the presenters at the Columbus Bar Association 5th Annual MLK, Jr. Memorial Symposium on January 27.  The morning session is entitled Modern Day Hate, and will cover the Muslim-American experience in present day U.S.

The 5th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Civil Rights Symposium will be split into two sessions –  morning and afternoon. Both of the sessions open to attorneys or non-attorneys, but space is limited so register in advance.

CAIR-Columbus Asylum Project Volunteer Attorney Training

On Thursday, February 9, the Columbus Chapter of CAIR-Ohio will host a training for volunteer attorneys who are interested in participating in the CAIR-Columbus Asylum Project.  The project will consist of preparing and filing free asylum applications for Syrian refugees.

Training will be provided by CAIR National Litigation Director, Lena Masri, who successfully ran a Syrian Refugee Asylum Project through her former position as Legal Director for CAIR-Michigan.
