CAIR reported today that some 400 delegates from 28 states met on Monday and Tuesday with more than 250 elected officials and congressional staffers during the record-breaking fourth annual “National Muslim Advocacy Day” on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

CAIR, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, said Muslim delegates participating in this year’s advocacy day event met with a third of the House of Representatives and almost half of the Senate.  The delegation organized by CAIR-Ohio met with 14 Ohio congressional offices over the two day period.

[NOTE: Last year, delegates met with some 230 congressional offices.]

“It was amazing to see the spirit and enthusiasm of all those who traveled from across our nation to meet with their elected officials to make the voice of the American Muslim community heard on Capitol Hill,” said CAIR National Executive Director Nihad Awad.

CAIR-Columbus announced today the filing of two federal lawsuits in the Southern District of Ohio against the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Attorney General of the United States, Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), on behalf of two Muslim legal permanent residents whose citizenship applications have been pending for an unreasonable amount of time without adjudication – sixteen and eighteen months respectively.

Neither of the Plaintiffs have any criminal history and one of the Plaintiffs is a doctor at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

CAIR, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today urged the nation’s Muslim community to prepare for the upcoming holy month of Ramadan by better understanding their legal rights in the workplace and school.

Community members are also encouraged to request free copies of CAIR-Columbus’ Employer’s Guide to Ramadan and the CAIR-Columbus Educator’s Guide to Islamic Religious Practices.  These publications outline the basics of Ramadan and offer suggestions for accommodations in the workplace and for students. On Monday, April 23, CAIR-Columbus, Muslim and interfaith leaders came together for a press conference to call on the Supreme Court to overturn the Muslim Ban. The Supreme Court of the United States will be hearing oral arguments on the travel ban on Wednesday, April 25.

Speakers included Usjid Hameed, CAIR-Columbus’ Public Affairs Coordinator, Nicol Ghazi with Muslim Family Services (MFS) of Ohio, Pastor Jason Ridley with the Allegheny West Conference of Seventh Day Adventist, Horsed Noah with the Somali Islamic Centers of Ohio (SICO), Imran Malik with Noor Islamic Cultural Center (NICC), and Dr. Tarunjit Butalia with the Interfaith Association of Central Ohio (IACO). Romin Iqbal, CAIR-Columbus’ Legal Director fielded questions following everyone’s remarks.

“The Muslim Ban is both unconstitutional and morally reprehensible,” Hameed said following the press conference. “The Ban violates the establishment clause of the United States Constitution because it clearly disfavors Islam and has separated numerous American-Muslim families from their loved ones. We urge the Supreme Court to strike down this discriminatory Ban.”
