On May 5, CAIR-Columbus filed a mandamus lawsuit in federal court in the Southern District of Ohio on behalf of an Iranian green card holder, who had a citizenship application pending for nearly a year and a half without adjudication. He had no criminal history and had been a permanent resident of the United States for over a decade. He also held a doctorate and a post doctorate from elite American universities. No reason was provided to him for the unfair delay of his citizenship application.
(COLUMBUS, OHIO, 7/11/2017) — The Columbus, Ohio, chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Columbus) today called on Columbus and Hilliard police departments to step up investigations of a string of burglaries of Muslim businesses and is urging business owners and community members to boost security.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organization, today decried the Trump administration’s new “Muslim ban” guidelines as a violation of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling, and promised to file legal challenges to the rules if implemented.
This week, the United States Supreme Court plans to conduct an initial review of President Trump’s Muslim Ban 2.0, which has been blocked from taking effect due to the federal court cases in Maryland and Hawaii.
Judges in those cases issued nationwide injunctions preventing implementation of sections 2(c) and 6 of the Ban, which barred travel from the six designated countries and suspended refugee processing. The federal government has appealed those cases. The Fourth and Ninth Circuits have both upheld the injunctions. At this point the federal government has filed a petition for certiorari with the Supreme Court, meaning they have asked the Court to hear one or both cases. This week the US Supreme Court will decide whether to hear the cases and also whether to grant or deny a stay of the current injunctions (meaning the ban would go back into effect).

Nabra Hassanen, 17, of Reston, Va., was abducted after leaving the All Dulles Area Muslim Society mosque in northern Virginia allegedly by a man who was later arrested on suspicion of murder. CAIR has called for a thorough investigation of a possible bias motive in the case.

On Friday, May 19, CAIR-Columbus Legal Director Romin Iqbal, gave a presentation at the annual spring meeting of the Ohio Management Lawyers Association (“OMLA”) on issues relating to providing religious accommodations for Muslims in the workplace.
CAIR-Columbus announced today that is has filed another lawsuit against USCIS and the FBI for unreasonably delaying the citizenship application of an Iranian national who has been a permanent resident of the United States since 2007. This lawsuit marks the thirteenth plaintiff CAIR-Columbus is currently representing in Federal Court with some type of immigration application delay just since the beginning of 2017 alone.
CAIR reported today that more than 400 delegates from 30 states, including a large delegation from Ohio organized by CAIR-Columbus, met on Monday and Tuesday with some 230 elected officials and congressional staffers during the record-breaking third annual “National Muslim Advocacy Day” on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today reported preliminary data revealing that cases of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) profiling of Muslims accounted for 23 percent of CAIR case intakes in the first three months of 2017. This represents a 1,035 percent increase in CBP bias cases reported so far this year over the same period in 2016.
